Bogus cop cons victims

'Captain Khumalo' uses a standard modus operandi to rob his prey for a second time

Theft victims are receiving a second blow at the hands of a bogus senior police officer.

uMkhanyakude Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, reports that a phony ‘Captain Khumalo’ uses a standard modus operandi to rob his prey for a second time.

‘We want to distance ourselves from him. We don’t know him and he is not a member of the SAPS.

‘The suspect phones various police stations around the cluster, to make inquiries about cases reported to the stations, and requests particulars of the complainants.

‘He will then phone the complainant and claim that he has recovered the stolen property, such as cars and livestock, and demands cash from the victim,’ said Mdletshe.

Mdletshe further reports that the suspect will demand that his victims send payment to him electronically and promises to return the stolen items after receiving the money.

‘In other instances, the con artist will phone relatives of the arrested person and demand money. He promises them he will speak to the prosecutor to arrange bail for the accused and disappears after receiving the money.

‘We want to urge members of the community not to entertain any phone calls from the bogus Captain Khumalo,’ he said.
