Melmoth teacher arrested for rape of pupil

CASES of attempted murder and rape are being investigated by police after a Melmoth school teacher allegedly gave medication to a learner to abort her pregnancy.

According to police records, the 51-year-old teacher manipulated the 13-year-old learner into believing they had a love affair.

The suspect has had a sexual relationship with the minor, a pupil at the high school in the Mkhindini Reserve where he worked, since February.

The learner fell pregnant and told the suspect, who gave her medication which he said was for the pain she was suffering.

After being rushed to hospital in a critical condition, it transpired that he had given her medication to terminate the pregnancy.

The cases were opened in eShowe and transferred to the eShowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, whose officers immediately arrested the suspect.

He appeared in the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday and the case was remanded to Monday this week for a formal bail application.
