Police warn against bogus cop

Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, revealed that a phony 'Captain Khumalo' uses a standard modus operandi to rob victims for a second time

THEFT victims in the uMkhanyakude district have been dealt a double blow at the hands of a bogus senior police officer in recent times.

Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, revealed that a phony ‘Captain Khumalo’ uses a standard modus operandi to rob victims for a second time.

‘The suspect phones various police stations in the cluster, making inquiries about reported cases and requesting particulars of the complainants.

‘He will then phone the complainants and claim that he has recovered their stolen property and would return it upon receiving payment.

‘In other instances the con artist will phone relatives of an arrested person and demand money, promising to arrange bail with the prosecutor.

‘We want to distance ourselves from him. We don’t know him and he is not a member of the SAPS.

‘We urge the community not to entertain any phone calls from this bogus policeman,’ Mdletshe said.
