Enter the Sunflower Day schools competition and win big

Schools that enter will need to sell TOPEs and celebrate Sunflower Day

IN the run-up to Sunflower Day on 20 September, the Sunflower Fund has launched this year’s Tube of Hope (TOPE) campaign and a schools competition in which schools can win big prizes.

Initiated 16 years ago, the annual Sunflower Day campaign is aimed at encouraging people to become involved in the fight against blood diseases.

Anchored in the sale of the TOPEs, the campaign is a fund-raiser for the recruitment of blood stem cell donors The Sunflower Fund pays for DNA tests to register donors. This comes at a cost of R3 100 per donor.

Stem cell donors give hope of a cure to patients diagnosed with life-threatening blood diseases such as leukaemia, who are in need of life-saving stem cell transplants.

In support of the campaign, the Sunflower Fund is appealing to schools across the country to enter the schools competition.

This requires schools to sell TOPEs and celebrate Sunflower Day.

Schools that enter the competition stand a chance to win prizes to the value of R30 000, including cash, vouchers and a trophy.

To enter, schools can sign up at www.sunflowerfund.org/sunflowerday and click on the schools competition tab.

The competition closes on Sunflower Day (20 September) and submissions will be evaluated by an independent judging panel.

Judging criteria includes the number of TOPEs bought in relation to the number of learners at the school and spirit displayed by the school in their celebrations on the day.

For anyone wanting to support the Sunflower Fund, TOPEs are on sale, retailing for R30, at Pick n Pay stores nationwide, selected independent pharmacies and online at Zando.
