Schoolboy sexual assault sentencing postponed

James Millin appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate's Regional Court on Thursday

THE former support staff member at Veldenvlei Primary School, who pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault on eight young schoolboys, will be back in court on 22 July.

James Millin appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Regional Court on Thursday.

The court heard Correctional Services’ and the probation officer’s reports leading up to his sentencing.

The victims’ parents told the probation officer in a group session how their children had suffered severe trauma, nightmares and behavioural changes, and were receiving treatment by psychologists.

Millin told his probation officer he had difficulty speaking about the incidents, was suffering from depression and was taking anti-depressants.

When asked questions during visits by the probation officer, the 22-year-old opted to provide written notes and cried through all the sessions.

He stated he had experienced mixed sexual feelings since the age of 17, felt more attracted to males and had never been in a relationship or intimate.

He grew up in foster care. His parents were divorced and he did not have a relationship with his mother.

He said he knew what he did was wrong, but did not know why he did it and tried to seek help after being charged.

In her report, the probation officer said Millin’s inappropriate actions traumatised the boys and exposed them to sexual behaviour at a young age.

By exploring his sexuality with children, Millin compromised their innocence in a setting (school) where they were supposed to be safe.

The matter was postponed and the probation officer was requested to obtain individual statements from the victims before the next court appearance.
