DAYLIGHT robbery appears to be on the rise in Empangeni, warns the Community Policing Forum (CPF).
CPF chairperson Zonita Grobbelaar, said that more homes were being robbed during the day, usually because home-owners were at work and because residents are less vigilant.
‘On 10 June, there was an armed robbery at Conrad Avenue in the early hours of the morning and two days later there was another morning break-in at Panorama.
‘On the 13th, a cell phone was stolen out of a flat on Hibberd Road during the day and a day later there was a report of suspicious men having approached a property in Boekenhout, claiming to have been called out to replace a geyser.
On 16 June, there was a morning break-in on Hibiscus Road.’
Grobbelaar warned residents to be on high alert at all times.
‘Residents should close their main gates, security gates and garage doors at all times to prevent impulsive theft.’
She urged residents to also test their alarms on a regular basis.
‘Even if you find that your remote is not operating fast enough, make sure to have the batteries replaced because in an emergency, it might not work at all.
‘Another tip is to throw away any rubbish found around your property as this may also attract criminals.
‘It is also important for residents to be careful of what they post on social media, especially when it pertains to check-ins as you never know who might see that you are not at home at a certain time.’
