The air that we breathe

World Environment Day is the biggest annual event for positive environmental action and takes place every 5 June

A STAGGERING 92% of the world’s population does not breathe clean air.

This is one of the statistics released by the United Nations on this, the 2019 World Environment Day, the theme for which is air pollution.

Air pollution costs the global economy $5-trillion annually in welfare costs and ground level ozone pollution is expected to reduce staple crop yields by 26% by 2030.

Hosted by China, this year’s World Environment Day seeks to highlight the quality of the air we breathe and encourage countries to bring about change.

About seven million people worldwide die prematurely each year from inhaling polluted air
Of this number, about four million deaths occur in Asia-Pacific.

World Environment Day 2019 will urge governments, industry, communities and individuals to come together to explore renewable energy and green technologies, and to improve air quality in cities and regions across the world.

World Environment Day is a United Nations initiative as the organisation is aware that the protection and improvement of the human environment is a major issue which affects the well-being of people and impacts on economic development throughout the world.

The celebration of this day provides an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by people, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment.

Since its inception in 1974, World Environment Day has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in more than 100 countries.
