SPCA requires community support

Help the Richards Bay SPCA build new receiving kennels for animals dropped off after hours

RICHARDS Bay SPCA is appealing to Zululanders far and wide to donate to and sponsor much-needed projects at the cash-strapped NPO’s premises.

Acting Chairperson Anne-mare Coetzee said the local branch is requesting donations of bricks and cement for new receiving kennels for the animals that are dropped off after hours, and for a staff kitchen.

‘We would like all donors to write their names on the bricks that they donate, take a photograph of them with their donation and post it on our Facebook page,’ she said.

‘If you are a business donating items, challenge other businesses, and if you are an individual challenge your family and friends to match or better your donation.

‘Your support will be extremely appreciated and you will forever be a part of our SPCA.’

Both Richards Bay and Empangeni SPCAs fall under the uMhlathuze Municipality, whose Community Services Department has, after many years of cutting funding, begun setting aside a lump sum annually for both facilities.

But this falls far short of the monthly running costs the NPO needs to pay salaries, feed the abandoned, stray and surrendered animals in its care, and carry out ongoing maintenance of their premises.

‘If necessary, collection of donated items can be arranged by contacting our office on 035 7532086, otherwise donations can be dropped off at our premises in Bayview Boulevard, Meerensee.’

In these difficult economic times, the SPCA has seen a surge in surrendered dogs and cats as owners can either no longer afford to feed them or have to move to smaller, usually non-pet friendly residences.

On top of this, the number of pet owners who fail to sterilise their dogs and cats is extremely high, resulting in litters upon litters of unwanted kittens and puppies.

The supply of kittens and puppies far outstrips the demand, making it very difficult to find homes for these animals.

Donations of food for cats and dogs, kittens and puppies, both wet and dry food, are always welcomed, as are blankets during the winter months, toys and bowls.
