Honouring nurses who go the extra mile

An event was held in Mtubatuba in commemoration of nurses both locally and worldwide

NURSES at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) were earlier this month honoured as International Nurses’ Day was commemorated at the health research facility in Somkhele, near Mtubatuba.

Delivering health care with mindfulness was the theme of the event, and a candle was lit to represent the symbolic lamp while nurses took the nurses’ pledge to serve with conscience and dignity.

‘Our increasing clinical research agenda is highly dependent on well-trained nurses to ensure that research protocols are implemented to a high standard, and that research participants are protected,’ said AHRI Director, Professor Deenan Pillay.

‘We are also keen to offer such nurses the opportunity to themselves develop their research careers. I would like to applaud our nursing staff on this important day.’

The KZN Department of Health attended the event and the Zululand District Clinical Programmes Manager, Linda Dlamini, emphasised in her keynote address the importance of ensuring that the province has a high calibre of health staff who are proud of their roles in the community and continuously strive for greatness.

‘Being a nurse does not mean you have reached the ceiling,’ she said.

‘I challenge nurses to write and research. Write about our stories, the work we do; that is how our profession will grow.’

Acknowledged by fellow nursing staff for her exemplary service, AHRI nurse Cabangeni Shange was awarded the facility’s Mama Dudu Biyela Lifetime Achievement Award.

‘This award is given to a nurse who goes the extra mile and is a role model, but above all one who conforms to the nurses’ pledge of service,’ said AHRI Research Nursing Manager Siphephelo Dlamini.
