Residents fume over cattle kraal in suburb

The community is calling for the kraal to be dismantled and the cattle to be impounded

COMPLAINTS about cows roaming the streets and being kept at residential premises in Brackenham have resurfaced, with residents demanding the matter be resolved as a matter of urgency.

Ward 26 Councillor Lesley Joseph confirmed on Wednesday that a site visit was conducted in Felt Fern street, where an owner has erected a kraal near the pump station to accommodate his herd.

The community is calling for the kraal to be dismantled and the cattle to be impounded.

The kraal has been built behind the owner’s property and holds about 15 cattle. They graze near the greenbelts in the suburb and along the North Central Arterial main road.

According to Joseph, the problem has been ongoing since last year and the owner was issued with a fine, but has since failed to resolve the issue and remove the cattle.

‘Residents have continually raised their concerns over the cattle roaming the streets and posing a danger to motorists.

‘There is also the health hazards associated with keeping cows near residences.

‘In March a cow fell into a homeowner’s pool in Via Davallia street, damaged her fence and premises while the herd destroyed her flower garden.

Brackenham Community Civic Watch, community policing forums and other community safety initiatives are also lobbying for action to be taken.
