Three suspects arrested for business robbery in Pongola

POLICE arrested three of ten suspects believed to be responsible for a business robbery in Pongola on Thursday.

It is alleged that a group of armed suspects entered a clothing shop at Pongola Shopping Centre, closed the door and demanded cash and cellphones from customers and employees at gunpoint.

Zululand Cluster Police spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said that suspects got away with a huge undisclosed amount of cash and 80 cellphones.

‘The value of stolen cellphones is estimated at R400 000. At about 8pm we received a tip-off of a vehicle fitting the description of the suspects’ getaway vehicle.

‘Members from Pongola SAPS swiftly reacted on the information and arrested three suspects aged between 24 and 27, and retrieved the vehicle they used.

‘During the arrest 36 cellphones were recovered. Seven suspects managed to flee,’ said Gwala.

‘Our investigating officers are working around the clock to ensure that the remaining suspects are brought to book. The arrested suspects have been charged for business robbery and they are due to appear in court soon.’
