Shoppers show support for flood victims

Shoppers spread goodwill has donations flood in for disaster victims

Flooding in KZN following heavy rains over the Easter weekend has affected many communities and left widespread damage.

Lives have been lost, people’s homes have been washed away and there has been considerable damage to property, prompting supermarket chain store Pick n Pay to support relief efforts.

They have made trolleys available at all KZN stores where customers can drop off donations of food, toiletries and clothing items.

‘This disaster has been particularly difficult for trained rescue and disaster management teams to manage, because the damage spans several areas,’ says Anil Gopichund, Pick n Pay’s KZN general manager, who has been facilitating local Pick n Pay store donations and assistance to communities in need.

‘Our stores have been assisting those affected and the rescue teams involved by providing food, beverages and blankets to local community halls and shelters.

‘We are thankful that Pick n Pay head office immediately made funding available so that we can help as many people as quickly as possible.

‘An additional 500 blankets have also been donated.’

‘The response from our customers, suppliers and employees has been phenomenal and many trolleys have already been delivered to various communities.

‘We will continue to make deliveries and provide assistance in the coming days,’ said Gopichund.

Any customer looking to donate non-perishable food items, toiletries or blankets and new clothing can donate in-store at all Pick n Pay KZN supermarkets.
