Relatives urged to identify 51 people killed in Durban storm

THE relatives of 51 people who lost their lives during the flash floods that swept through Durban on Monday and Tuesday, have been urged to come forward and identify the bodies.

Thirty-six of the deceased are being kept at the Pinetown Medico-Legal mortuary.

They were taken in from Chatsworth, Malvern, Mariannhill, and surrounding areas.

Fifteen others are being kept at the Magwaza Maphalala (Gale) Street Medico-Legal mortuary after they were brought in from Umlazi, Reservoir Hills, Overport, the Bluff and surrounding areas.

KZN Health MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, said clergy and social workers would be on hand to provide counselling for the bereaved families.

The extent of damage to infrastructure includes flooded and blocked roads, collapsed buildings and perimeter walls, blocked storm water drains and sewer lines, flooded buildings and households, and power outages as a result of electric cable damage.

Displaced people have been temporarily accommodated in community halls where they receive emergency relief assistance.
