Rabies fight continues

Veterinary services have been engaging with communities to vaccinate their pets.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture says there is no need for panic despite 39 positive cases of rabies having been reported in the province since the beginning of the year.

No deaths have been reported.

Various organisations, including the Department of Agriculture’s veterinary services have been engaging with communities to vaccinate their pets.

In a vaccination campaign held in eShowe last Saturday morning, 172 dogs, 35 cats and eight horses received vaccinations.

As an added intervention in eShowe, Liezl Marais will be working in conjunction with the eShowe pound and eShowe SPCA to attend to stray dogs and cats in the town.

She will be on call from 8am to 4pm with a dedicated vehicle to remove these animals off the streets. Marais can be contacted on 076 3516189.

Alderman Stan Larkan, through the municipality, is also in the process of reviewing the municipal by-law with regard to stray animals.

Once completed, the drafts will be advertised in the media for comment.
