Speaking out against albanism myths

The KZN Department of Health rolled out an albanism health awareness campaign in Mbazwana

AN awareness campaign to highlight the dangers of sun exposure to people living with albanism was recently rolled out, with the first event taking place in Mbazwana.

Organised by the KZN Department of Health, MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo participated in an organised march after hats and sunscreen had been distributed to those present.

The hats and sunscreen will help members of Mbazwana’s albino community be protected themselves against the harmful rays of the sun which cause cancer, and which this community is particularly susceptible to.

The MEC also used the event as an opportunity to educate people against the myth that the body parts of people living with albanism could be used as muthi.

Agreeing with these sentiments were a number of traditional healers who also participated in the march.

They joined forces with MEC Dhlomo in speaking out strongly against these myths.

Dhlomo called on all responsible members of society to reject albino-related fallacies and rather embrace, support and protect people living with the condition.

He explained that albanism is caused by a shortage of melanin which gives the skin its pigmentation.

The campaign will be spread to other districts in the province, which also have large numbers of people with albinism.
