Rabies vaccination compulsory for pet owners

All pet owners are legally obligated to vaccinate their animals against rabies

WHILE rabies statistics are reportedly looking more positive than in recent months, experts warn this is no cause for pet owners to become complacent.

The recent rabies outbreak in which northern KZN was hard hit, included one case of a rabid dog in uMhlabuyalingana.

The rabies body in eShowe (RABIES) conducts regular checks of the region’s animals, particularly in rural areas where there are numerous stray dogs.

The body also holds regular awareness workshops at which people of all ages, including school children, are educated on the dangers of rabies and what to do if bitten or scratched by a rabid animal.

In such cases, it is essential to act quickly.

Wash scratches and wounds with soap under running water for 10 minutes.

Then go straight to a doctor or hospital for a course of four vaccinations.

‘Do not let a clinic turn you away, but insist on speaking with someone who can help you with the vaccinations,’ said RABIES spokesperson and veterinarian, Dr Vanessa Mayer.

‘If a clinic does not have vaccine, ask them to find out the nearest one that does.

‘If you have a bite, you will also need injections of rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) into the wound.

‘You have a right to call an ambulance if you need transport.’

Mayer went on to say that while there is a decline in rabies cases in KZN, this is no reason to relax as it is only vaccinating animals against rabies that keeps the disease under control.

‘All pet owners are under a legal obligation to vaccinate their dogs against rabies.

‘It is your responsibility and yours alone, not the state’s, the SPCA’s or anyone else’s.

‘Rabies outbreaks happen because people become complacent, stop vaccinating and adopt an ‘it won’t happen to me’ attitude.

‘As a result, people die of rabies, mostly children, so be a responsible pet owner and vaccinate your pets.’
