Vital road upgrades for rural communities

MORE than R400-million has been spent by the KZN Department of Transport on upgrading two major routes within northern KZN.

The P49 connecting Nongoma to Vryheid and the P435 in Ndumo were both upgraded from gravel to blacktop surfaces in a bid to provide better quality strategic routes to these rural communities.

At 17.5km, the P435 in Ndumo is part of the Indumo Nkululeko Project and the department’s investment totalled R141-million.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, MEC Mxoliso Kaunda also launched the District Community Safety Forum in an effort to fight cross-border crime.

The forum comprises all government departments, law enforcement agencies, municipalities and community crime fighting organisations, and its purpose is to co-ordinate crime fighting efforts from ward to district level.

‘The department will continue to develop road infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, to connect community members with places of economic activity,’ said Kaunda.

He also commended local law enforcement agencies and community crime fighting structures for reducing crime in the uMkhanyakude District.

The 23km P49 is a strategic route connecting Nongoma with Vryheid.

The department’s investment amounted to R311-million.
