BREAKING: G4S security robbed at gunpoint near Mtuba

No one was seriously injured during the incident

POLICE are on the hunt for a group of suspects who held up G4S security personnel at a Caltex petrol station in KwaBhoboza, near Mtubatuba on the KZN north coast, shortly after 9am this morning.

According to KwaMsane SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, the suspects emerged as the G4S vehicle pulled into the petrol station.

They must have been following the G4S vehicle because when the vehicle stopped two suspects emerged from a Ford Fiesta, charcoal grey in colour, and held up the security guards. They proceeded to make off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Mdletshe said the suspects had been armed with pistols and it was unclear as to how many people remained in the getaway vehicle while the robbery was in progress.

‘We are not sure of the total amount of suspects at this stage, all we know is that two got out of the vehicle to commit the robbery.

‘They fled in the direction of Ophaphasi Reserve,’ he said.

Police are currently at the scene of the crime in which no one was seriously injured.

Earlier this month, two police officers were killed in the line of duty following a shoot-out with cash-in-transit robbers in Nongoma.

Lieutenant Colonel Carl van der Vyver (51) of the police Crime Intelligence Unit and Warrant Officer Sfundo Erasmus Musa (39) of the Special Task Force were shot and killed when they intercepted a group of heavily armed suspects who had attacked a G4S Security vehicle with explosives on Hlabisa road.

Seven robbers were also killed, while one female officer had to be airlifted to hospital from the scene after she was shot in the leg and seriously wounded.
