WATCH: Resident Bay hippo spotted crossing John Ross Highway

The animal was spotted near the Green Africa intersection along the John Ross Highway in Richards Bay a short while ago

AN adult hippo has just been spotted crossing the John Ross Highway within the vicinity of the Green Africa intersection.

A motorist was able to capture the large animal crossing the road as a bus approaches the intersection.

Members of the public are once again advised to keep their distance and by no means attempt to provoke or get near the hippo.

On Monday afternoon traffic along the John Ross was brought to a standstill as motorists stopped to take pictures and videos of a hippo grazing along the banks near the same intersection.

King Cetshwayo District Conservation Officer, Phumla Zulu, warned members of the public to refrain from approaching any wild animal.

‘Any wild animal will become defensive and attack when provoked, and provocation need only be one person a bit too close to it.

‘We all know there are hippos in this area, so when people see them they must just slow down and drive past.

‘Respect the animal and give it some space,’ said Zulu.
