Cabinet wants action on disasters

Spotlight on devastating storms

THE KZN government has called on all public servants and other stakeholders to move with speed in addressing the immediate and long-term needs of communities that have been affected by recent devastating storms.

The heavy storms that wreaked havoc mainly in the northern parts of the province have left hundreds without shelters.

This call was made at the sitting of the Executive Council held at the Nelson Mandela capture site in Howick last week.

Acting Premier Sihle Zikalala said there was a need to start considering the establishment of a reserve disaster fund in the province, to be refund by national government.

His remarks follows a report received by the Executive Council on the recent storms that hit mainly the Uthukela, Umzinyathi and Harry Gwala districts over the weekend. More than 400 houses were destroyed, with five people injured. No fatalities were reported.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has initiated a process of appointing a service provider to do an assessment so that relief can be provided to the affected families.
