Water purification plant to benefit KwaDukuza community
Use water sparingly urges minister
SOUTH Africa is not yet out of the drought season, so consumers must still adhere to the government’s call to use water sparingly.
This message was reiterated by Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pamela Tshwete, speaking at the Lower
Thukela Bulk Water Purification Plant in Mandeni.
The water purification facility will benefit more than 300 000 people in KwaDukuza.
The scheme abstracts and treats water from the Uthukela River to supply secondary bulk and reticulation networks within the Ilembe District Municipality.
According to KwaDukuza Deputy Mayor, Dolly Govender, the purpose of the scheme is to supply an additional 55Ml/d of treated water to the coastal and inland areas of KwaDukuza and Mandeni.
Govender said the water purification scheme was necessitated by a strong supply demand, precipitated by the growth of local municipalities within the district.
The plant was commissioned in 2017 by the Department of Water and Sanitation and Umgeni Water and the estimated total cost of the project until the completion is estimated to be R1.32-billion.
