Zululand documentary film to premiere internationally

The award-winning film was shot in the iMfolozi wilderness

SISTERS of the Wilderness, a documentary film set in the iMfolozi wilderness area and depicting the journey of five sisters as they reconnect with each other and with nature, will this month premiere internationally.

The social impact feature-length documentary won the Best South African Feature Documentary award at the Durban International Film Festival last year, where it also qualified for an Oscar consideration.

It will premiere internationally at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Set in South Africa’s iconic Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, the film follows the sisters’ journey of healing and self-discovery, reminding us that we are all intimately linked with nature.

Walking in big game country and camping under the stars, the women are surrounded by wildlife of all shapes and sizes, and are at the mercy of the elements.

Carrying on their backs all they need for the journey, the sisters endure both physical and emotional hardships, and learn what it takes to survive in the wild.

‘We want to transfer the audience to an ancient place where no barriers separate humans and nature,’ said producer Ronit Shapiro of One Nature Films.

Shapiro’s experience in the iMfolozi wilderness and a meeting with South Africa’s legendary conservationist, the late Dr Ian Player, inspired her to make this film.

‘A journey into the wilderness is an intense experience where one can expect to undergo a personal transformation.’

The film also explores the threat to the iMfolozi wilderness by expanding opencast coal mining on its boundary, and the intensifying rhino poaching calamity in the area.
