Christmas cobra an unwanted gift

‘There have been an unusually high number of snakes around lately'

Of all the things that go bump in the night, a Forest Cobra is the least expected and most unwanted – especially on Christmas Day.

‘I got a call at around 9pm from a resident in a complex at Arboretum, near the lake,’ said always-on-standby snake catcher Fred Lubbe.

‘The gent had walked onto his unlighted patio and heard a ‘thump’ sound behind him.

‘There was nowhere the snake could have fallen from and I think it had struck at him – that was the noise – and fortunately missed or else he would have had a nasty few weeks ahead of him.

‘Once he put the light on he saw the 1.3m female Forest Cobra and kept an eye on it until I arrived,’ said Fred.

‘This particular reptile is not very aggressive, unlike some of the others I have recently captured.

‘There have been an unusually high number of snakes around lately, probably owing to the amount of rain we’ve had this summer.’
