IFP calls for competent leadership in KZN Health Department

Party wants Premier to intervene

THE IFP in KZN has called on Premier Willies Mchunu to ensure that competent individuals are appointed as the KZN Department of Health head and Chief Financial Officer.

The IFP’s provincial spokesperson on health, Ncamisile Nkwanyana, said while the process of filling these posts were at an advance stage, they wanted those vying for the posts to have proven track records.

‘These candidates must in no way have been involved in any corrupt activities. We want the premier to appoint an independent body to be in charge of shortlisting, interviewing and making recommendations as to which candidates are most suitable, so as to avoid the appointment of any politically favoured,, yet incompetent individuals,’ she said.

Nkwanyana said the KZN Health Department was in dire need of competent leadership.

‘The fact that we don’t have a permanent CFO and HOD is part of the reason why this department is struggling to fulfill its mandate.

‘Acting in positions causes paralysis because officials will be afraid to take bold decisions. Without effective leadership and good governance it is impossible to achieve and sustain effective administration.

‘This department is in shambles. I think what we are missing here is a steady, long-term vision of what health care should be and a strategic plan,’ she said.
