Investments to boost agriculture businesses

Large investment earmarked for poultry and abattoir projects

THE Department of Labour has earmarked an investment of R800-million in agriculture and related business and projects for the coming year.

Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) Commissioner, Teboho Maruping, said they have commissioned a report by the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) to investigate the feasibility of investing in poultry and abattoir projects nationally.

Maruping was speaking during a site visit led by Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant at Daybreak Farms, a poultry project in Delmas, Mpumalanga.

The commissioner said preliminary findings by the PIC have shown that investments in abattoir and poultry projects in KwaZulu-Natal, North West, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga would be feasible.

The announcement of the investment comes on the heels of commitments made by social partners at last week’s jobs summit.

In 2015, the UIF – an entity of the Department of Labour – invested close to R500-million into Daybreak Farms through the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).

Minister Oliphant applauded the investment, which she said has made a positive impact to turn things around and make the company profitable.

‘If the project maintains its success, it will be replicated in other provinces,’ she said.
