Free online art exhibition launched

'This is an opportunity for anyone to get creative'

AN online exhibition was launched for local artists, art students, schools and the public to showcase their work in commemoration of World Alzheimer’s Day last Friday..

Artists have been urged to participate by submitting their work under the theme ‘Remembering You’.

The exhibition, launched by Livewell Villages, a care facility for people with dementia and Alzheimers, aims to commemorate this day by raising awareness on the impact of the conditions on individuals, families and society.

‘The ephemeral nature of memory is highlighted daily in our work with people living with dementia, the umbrella term for a group of conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, which are characterised by symptoms such as progressive cognitive decline and memory loss,’ said Chief Executive Officer of Livewell Villages, Ivan Oosthuizen.

He said the exhibition seeks to inspire people to reflect on the essence of memory and trying to capture thoughts and emotions around this abstract concept through artistic expression.

‘The exhibition is open to a wide variety of mediums, from paintings and drawings to poetry and prose, and may include sketches, pottery, collages, photographs, film, music and any other form of expression the artist chooses,’ Oosthuizen said.

The first collection to be uploaded is made up of photographs of pottery creations made by residents of Livewell Villages. Pottery is one of a multitude of enjoyable activities on offer at the dementia care facility to aid cognitive and sensory stimulation.
