NSRI issues spring tide warning

Anglers, bathers, coastal hikers and beach strollers are urged to be cautious this week

THE NSRI urges members of the public to exercise caution along the coastline for the coming week, as the full moon spring tide, peaking on Tuesday, has begun to increase intensity.

The warning goes out to all anglers, bathers, coastal hikers and beach strollers, and came into effect yesterday (Saturday).

‘Bathers should only go to beaches where and when lifeguards are on duty, and swim within the safe demarcated swimming zones that lifeguards post using their red and yellow flags,’ said NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon.

‘NSRI urges parents to ensure their children have responsible adult supervision around inland and coastal waters.’

Spring tide occurs at full moon and again at new moon, bringing with it a higher than normal high tide, lower than normal low tide and stronger than normal rip currents.
