WATCH: More than 30 000 litres of water wasted in Empangeni every day from just one leak

According to a recent report by Stats SA, 33.8% of households in KZN do not have access to piped water, yet water waste continues

AT least 30 000 litres of water is wasted per day at just one leakage point in the vicinity of Empangeni’s Magazulu Reservoir, but two more such leaks have also been left unattended by the municipality.

In June the ZO reported that millions of litres of water have been wasted owing to the three leaks.

According to a resident, one of the leaks has been there for years, while the most recent one, which can be seen in the video below, has been leaking water since May this year.

City of uMhlathuze spokesperson, Mdu Ncalane, previously told the ZO that a team would be deployed to the area to investigate the matter.

It seems the ‘solution’ has been to insert a pipe to the source of the leak and divert the water off the road into a bush.

Calculations indicate that between May and this month, close to four million litres of water have been wasted as a result of the leak shown on the video.
