Madiba chose ANC than family-says Oliphant

Mandela's legacy must be protected

ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member Mildred Oliphant has urged South African citizens to remember the sacrifices and the contribution made by former President Nelson Mandela, by ‘doing the right things in his honour’.

Oliphant delivered a Nelson Mandela lecture at the Ngwelezana Community Hall, organised by ANC’s King Cetshwayo branch.

She said it would be unfortunate if people from all walks of life were to forget both Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu’s contribution to the struggle for freedom.

The two leaders fought not only against white domination, but also fought against black domination.

‘The life of Nelson Mandela is a true reflection of the Freedom Charter.

‘There were instances when Mandela was asked by the apartheid regime to provide information on ANC operatives or resign from the ANC, so as to be released, but he said he would rather die than sell out the revolution.

‘Mandela was one individual who knew nothing else other than the ANC,’ added Oliphant, who is also a member of the King Cetshwayo branch.
