BRICS partnership a much-needed recipe

When the multilateral trade system was under enormous threat, BRICS stepped up to the challenge

LABOUR Minister Mildred Oliphant says the wealth of experience and expertise in the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) partnership, is a much-needed recipe to deal with global challenges.

Oliphant was addressing the 4th Labour and Employment Ministerial Meeting (LEMM) held at Fairmont Zimbali Resort in KwaDukuza on Thursday.

She said BRICS member states must exploit the different platforms at their disposal.

‘Sharing and exchanging views on regulations and policies to shape our labour markets will provide the necessary impetus towards achieving our stated objectives,’ she said.

She said the goal is to promote inclusive growth and sustainable development to eliminate unemployment, poverty and inequality.

‘We have put forward a three-year Working Implementation Plan for 2019-2021 to guide and ensure that all commitments taken at previous Labour and Employment Ministerial Meetings are not only implemented but also provide tangible outcomes for our efforts,’ she said.

‘We also want to underscore that the Labour and Employment track, is closely linked with other BRICS work streams such as finance, education, global economic realities, trade as well as science, technology and innovation.

‘We are particularly grateful to the various pledges by BRICS member-countries, to invest in our economy especially in the key strategic assets of our country and by extension our African continent. It will go down in history that when the multilateral trade system was under enormous threat, BRICS stepped up to the challenge,’ she said.
