Post Office IT system improved for smooth grant payments

The upgrades will allow SAPO sufficient capacity to process grant payments transaction volumes

THE South African Post Office (SAPO) says it has completed upgrades to its IT system to ensure smooth grant payment for July.

This after thousands of grant beneficiaries were left in the lurch during the last payment cycle owing to a technical glitch in the system.

SAPO said they are confident that social grant beneficiaries will experience a smooth payment experience this time around.

‘The upgrades will allow SAPO sufficient capacity to process grant payment transaction volumes involving social beneficiaries who have migrated to the new gold SASSA card.

‘Infrastructure upgrades have also been implemented on Postbank’s connectivity to Bankserv to improve transaction speeds,’ said SAPO COO, Lindiwe Kwele.

SAPO and SASSA are currently working to migrate all beneficiaries to the new gold SASSA card, which is tailored to prevent illegal deductions.

‘The new SASSA card operates fully within the national payment system and social grants beneficiaries can use it to make ATM and merchant cash withdrawals, free retail merchant purchases as well as to withdraw cash over the counter inside a Post Office.

‘SAPO urges social grants beneficiaries on the new SASSA card to take full advantage of this multi-channel access to their funds.

‘Beneficiaries who switched to the new gold card do not have to go queue at the Post Office to access their money.

‘On midnight, 31 July, the money will be credited into the accounts and beneficiaries can make transactions with their cards from any of the channels available to them.

The new SASSA cards however does not work at the old pay points where beneficiaries were previously paid in cash by CPS officials.

The old white SASSA card will expire at the end of September and beneficiaries are urged switch to the new one as soon as possible.
