WITH screening key to reducing cancer rates, local Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Jayeshnee Moodley says women must empower themselves in the fight against cervical cancer.
Dr Moodley will be hosting a cervical cancer awareness campaign and Pap smear drive at Melomed Private Hospital on the John Ross Parkway on 7 and 10 August with the first 100 women receiving free Pap smears.
The campaign, which coincides with Women’s Month, aims to create awareness and debunk the stigma attached to Pap smears. Cervical cancer remains a major health concern worldwide, especially in the developing world. It is the most common gynaecological cancer, affecting one in 42 women.

‘Pap smear screening is the only tool we have available to diagnose pre-cancer lesions and ensure appropriate and timeous care for these women. Many women shy away from a pap smear because of the fear and embarrassment associated with the procedure. The more ladies we can help, the faster our community will learn about the importance of a Pap smear and the diagnosis of cervical cancer,’ Dr Moodley said.
In most cases, cervical cancer has no symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage. Pap smears are a safe and affordable way to screen for signs of cervical disease and pose no health risks.
The simple test takes less than 15 minutes at a hospital or clinic. During this time, the doctor or nurse will be looking for changes in the cells of the cervix, which can occur very slowly but can lead to serious problems such as cervical cancer.
The free Pap smear drive takes place on Tuesday, 7 August and Friday, 10 August at Melomed Hospital (suite 107, first floor).
