WE all know we live in a region rich in cultural history, wildlife and a diverse environment.
But do we stop to look around at what is right on our doorstep around Richards Bay and Empangeni?
Local residents recently went on a tour of Port Durnford and eSikhaleni, and treated their international guests to local sights, sounds and flavours.
Morgan and Jackie Smit of Zululand Yacht Club took some visitors from Lesotho on a tour of the area.
They started off by visiting the uMlalazi River mouth at Port Durnford where they enjoyed a swim in the ocean.

They then visited King Cetshwayo’s monument where they learnt the history of the king, including when he was taken into exile.
Afterwards they went to Tavern 547 where they enjoyed lunch and drinks, as well as a tour of owner Hlengiwe’s newly established art gallery.
Hlengiwe has also started researching the history of the Zulu people.
‘I can definitely recommend a trip to eSikhaleni. It’s rich in history, the beers are cold and the food is scrumptious,’ said Jackie.
Meanwhile, Vanessa le Roux from the uMhlathuze Community Tourism Organisation also facilitated a tour group in the area.
