KwaMbonambi communities protest over service delivery

They would rather the municipality spends money on service delivery, not sport tournaments

Community members from KwaMthethwa, Sokhulu and other areas surrounding KwaMbonambi took to the streets early this morning (Thursday) in protest over the way in which Mfolozi Municipality is spending its money.

The morning began with protesters blocking the N2 at the KwaMbonambi exit with branches and other debris.

KwaMbonambi police and the Empangeni Public Order Policing unit dispersed the protesters and re-opened the road.

The protesters then marched to the Mfolozi Municipal offices where they handed over a memorandum of grievances to Mfolozi Mayor Smanga Mgenge.

According to the protesters, they are angry that the municipality has spent money on the Siyabonga sport tournament due to kick off today and run until Sunday.

Local business owners are also up in arms over the municipality reportedly not utilising their services, using instead the services of businesses from elsewhere.

Mayor Mgenge is addressing the protesters.

This follows four days of violent protests further north on the N2 last week, when trucks were looted and burnt, and vehicles stoned near Hluhluwe.
