A hijacking plot to steal a delivery truck became a fruitless exercise for hijackers when the vehicle overturned in the middle of the road in the Mfekayi area.

While being driven away, the truck rolled on the road – leaving hijackers with only smashed fruit on Thursday.

According to the police, the truck driver had parked his truck full of fruit on the side of the road, to answer a call of nature at the Hlabisa turnoff, when five men approached him.

The man was driving from Durban to Johannesburg when the incident occurred. Hijackers apparently grabbed him and threw him to the ground before driving away with the truck.

However, while driving away, only 800 metres from the scene, the truck overturned.

Police said the hijackers ran away leaving the driver with only minor injuries. He was sent to a local clinic.

The hijackers left a gun behind and the police are searching for the information on the gun owner. The firearm was also sent for ballistic testing to ensure it is not linked to any other crime.

The KwaMsane police spokesperson advised all drivers to use secure restrooms at truck stops and other safe places.

He said parking on the side of the road is not only dangerous but also makes it easier to become a target of criminals.

‘People must be vigilant on the roads to avoid these incidents. I advise them to put their safety first,’ he said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident can contact Col Xolani Mbele at KwaMsane police station on 083 3591420.
