Mozambique tar road close to completion

The road will see travelling time between Maputo in Mozambique to Kosi Bay drastically reduced

If all continues to go according to plan, the much talked about Maputo-to-Ponta do Ouro road, encompassing Africa’s largest suspension bridge, should be open for business earlier than planned.

Contractors have been working around the clock to complete the road and bridge, and hope to have it open for use in the coming weeks.

Once complete, the road will see travelling time between Maputo in Mozambique to Kosi Bay, South Africa’s east coast border post, drastically reduced, from six hours on demanding sandy roads to just 90 minutes.

Many people involved in the Mozambican tourism industry, which sees hordes of holidaymakers annually travelling South Africa’s east coast to enter via the Kosi Bay border post, are thrilled at the improvement.

‘Ponta’s charm will soon be accessible to all,’ said Lawrence Dale of Ponta Beach Camps.

Speaking at the Trade and Investment KZN Export Summit in Durban late last year, Paul Runge, Director of Projects and Development Finance at Africa House, said completion of the road was expected to lead to a stream of international tourists visiting the province.

He also said KZN exporters should be seeking opportunities to develop ancillary roads in Mozambique as the province stands to benefit from a tourism boom.
