N2 near Mtubatuba open at present – but situation remains unstable

KZN Cabinet concerned about N2 protests

THE N2 between Mtubatuba and Hluhluwe is open to motorists, however it is unclear how long the road will remain open following ongoing protest action on the national highway.

The Empangeni Public Order Policing (POP) Unit together with SAPS from KwaMsane, Mtubatuba and RTI members are on scene attempting to restore calm.

Protesters called on Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Mxolisi Kaunda to come into the area and address them, who did so yesterday.

Meanwhile the KwaZulu-Natal Executive Council (Cabinet) expressed serious concern on the growing spate of blockades by protesters of major roads and called for stern action by law enforcement agencies against those involved such acts.

This follows the blockading this week of the N2 between Mtubatuba and Hluhluwe by protesters where three trucks were set on fire.

A similar incident happened on the N3 yesterday when about 50 protesting truck drives went on a go-slow which later resulted in the blockade of the free-way.

Premier Willies Mchunu said that there was an ongoing engagement by a government task team with the truck drivers but that police should ready themselves for any eventuality beginning today.
