Department issues scam alert

Fraudsters pose as government officials in correspondence to their unsuspecting victims

THE Department of Labour has issued a warning to the public of a scam doing the rounds.

Using the department’s official letterheads and logo, scammers reportedly contact unsuspecting victims with a quotation request for the procurement of solar panels.

The department’s anti-fraud and corruption unit said the criminals’ modus operandi is to use the department’s coat of arms, address, name of the office building and even the contact details of department officials, to make correspondence appear legitimate.

The department said it has been inundated with complaints from the public and urges people to exercise utmost caution by verifying all requests for quotations with the department before responding.
