Rabies not yet taken seriously
Pet owners need to take responsibility to fight rabies
BESIDES being a legal requirement, not all pet owners are taking responsibility for their pets by ensuring their animals are vaccinated against rabies.
Reports of rabid dogs and cats continue despite efforts by individuals and government officials to reach pet owners to ensure that their animals are vaccinated.
In the latest report for the week of 7 to 13 April, eight dogs and one cat were found to be rabid in KZN.
Among the dogs, two cases were reported in eShowe and one in Mandeni.

Steps to take
• Wash any scratches or wounds with running water and soap for at least 15 minutes
• Get to a doctor or hospital for a course of four vaccinations.
• Do not let a clinic turn you away.
• Insist on speaking to someone that can advise you about vaccination.
• If the clinic does not have vaccine, ask them to determine which clinic has vaccine and ask them to arrange an ambulance to transport you there.
