Open day provides business opportunity

King Cetshwayo District has appointed DACT to support SMMEs in the metal and steel sector by establishing and developing their businesses

WHILE the high unemployment rate and lack of jobs remains a challenge, the Downstream Aluminium Centre for Technology (DACT) in Richards Bay is encouraging candidates with an entrepreneurial flair to start up businesses in the metal and steel sector.

DACT hosted an open day at the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) centre in Richards Bay on Tuesday and announced that the King Cetshwayo District has appointed DACT to support Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) in this sector.

Members of the public were invited to the information session to explore business opportunities.

DACT Business Development Officer Cynthia Mtshali said the training facility was funded through BHP Billiton and administered by the Zululand Chamber of Business Foundation.

‘When the Department of Trade and Industry pledged their support, the focus shifted to provide incubating facilities and services specifically for start-up SMMEs.

‘DACT has since developed into an incubating facility and hosts businesses in the metal fabrication, welding and aluminium casting industries and clients of DACT can use the infrastructure, equipment and tools provided at partly subsidised rates.’

Mtshali said some of the shared services provided include technical and business advice, internet facilities and assistance with financial and other administration.
