WATCH: NSRI performs high speed rescue mission
The simulated rescue was thoroughly enjoyed by the spectators
WITH a record turnout at the Bonanza hosted by Richards Bay Ski Boat Club this weekend, there was much water sport activity in the Bay.
Joining in on the action was the NSRI, who put together a demonstration.
The simulated rescue involved two spear fishermen who had become separated from their boat.
Using a phone in a dry bag, the stranded fishermen called for help using the Safe Trax app.
They also set off a flare.

After being alerted to the message, NSRI Station 19 sent out a ‘page’ and rescue efforts were launched.
Both land and sea-based responders headed to the area, with the mobile response unit and rescue swimmer arriving first on the scene and reporting back to base on the status of the situation.
A decision was taken to swim some flotation and support out to the stranded spear fishermen.
The sea rescue boat rendezvoused with the rescue swimmer and fishermen, and all three were retrieved.
Performing specialised skills, NSRI Station 19 flawlessly executed this high speed rescue response entry or ‘high speed bail-off’, which had the crowd hyped and thoroughly enjoying the action.
