CONTRACTORS at Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) have been striking since last week, campaigning for a ‘living wage’.
According to EFF spokesperson for the region Cllr Rebecca Mohlala, some of the striking contractors earn as little as R2 500/month.
‘The EFF is in solidarity with the workers who are striking.
‘Our people who are working the mines must benefit from the minerals.
‘We cannot allow this situation, where they are not even earning a living wage.’

The striking contractors have been in talks with RBM management, but at the time of going to print, no decision had been reached or solution put in place.
‘RBM is engaging with a group of contractor companies whose employees have been blocking access to RBM sites,’ said RBM management.
‘The situation is being closely monitored and we are committed to resolving the issues speedily in order to resume operations and open safe access to site.’
The ZO was unable to confirm or clarify alleged threats made by uMfolozi Mayor SW Mgenge to the striking workers.
According to Mohlala, Mgenge threatened the workers for involving a political party in the strike.
