Youth summit focuses on empowerment

Youth discuss ways to capitalise on development and economic opportunities

KWADUKUZA Mayor Ricardo Mthembu used the KwaDukuza Youth Development summit platform to pay tribute to former KwaDukuza Councillor, Preva Khumalo, who played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Youth Affairs Committee in the KwaDukuza Council.

The three-day summit held in Ballito had as focus point the needs of young people and how the municipality and other sectors can respond to the needs of local youth.

It was attended by more than 70 delegates.

‘We use this occasion to reflect on the work of Khumalo and learn from his legacy. His contributions were part of a bigger project,’ Mthembu said.

‘Khumalo served as a Ward Councillor in the KwaDukuza Municipality and will always be remembered for his dedicated contributions towards the development of young people.

‘He was brutally murdered near his Driefontein home in August, 2006. He is respected for his immense involvement in the struggle for liberation during the apartheid period.’

Mthembu said at that time youth issues were misunderstood.

He advised the delegates to focus on transforming the economy so that the work of the summit may find space in the youth development framework.

‘The biggest issues affecting young people today are the lack of skills and unemployment, and young people must fight for self-determination and independence.’
