Drowning tragedy claims young life

A seven-year-old boy and 43-year-old man drowned in two separate incidents

A YOUNG boy tragically lost his life last weekend after drowning in the Msunduzi River in Sokhulu near KwaMbonambi.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 17 March.

According to community members, two other children had gone into the river in a boat and told the seven-year-old victim to stay ashore.

However, he jumped in the river to swim after the boat, but drowned.

SAPS Search and Rescue members attended the scene, but owing to the presence of hippos and crocodiles in the river, were unable to initiate a dive search, but maintained a presence at the scene.

On Sunday community members launched their own search and recovered the boy’s body at about 2pm.

The body was taken to the state mortuary.

‘uMfolozi Mayor SW Mgenge visited the scene and committed to assist the family with the necessary funeral arrangements,’ said Phakamani Philani, uMfolozi Municipal Communications Manager.

‘The mayor thanked the community for the support they gave the family.’

In other news, a 43-year-old man drowned in a lake in Mfekayi near Mtubatuba on 10 March.

Community members retrieved the body.
