By-election looms after councillor jailed

THE Mthonjaneni Municipality is gearing up for a by-election after Ward 7 Councillor Mthokozisi Mthembu (45) was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the Piet Retief Regional Court on Wednesday.
Mthembu was arrested for stock theft at a police roadblock in Vryheid in December 2016 after stealing cows from a Piet Retief farm.
A truck carrying 11 cows was stopped and Mthembu was arrested after failing to prove ownership and was charged for stock theft.

ANC Musa Dladla Regional Secretary, Tholinhlanhla Gwala, said the law has taken it course and they are now preparing for a by-election.
Mthonjaneni Speaker Ntombiyenkosi Jiyane said the Rules and Ethics Committee will meet today (Monday) to discuss Mthembu’s conviction and sentencing.
‘The committee will follow the Municipalities’ Act to remove him from his seat as a councillor as he has been sentenced to more than 12 months without the option of a fine.’
