A FULL blown out strike is looming in Zululand District Municipality (ZDM) as workers claim that they are earning peanuts when it is compared to other district municipalities around the province.
One of the employees said that they are ready to go on strike as the municipality is failing to adhere to their demands.
‘We have opted to resume our work on Thursday after four days illegal strike, where we were demanding compensation after the municipality failed to pay us on time.
‘We also raised the issue of inequality within this sphere of government after we discovered that other employees from other district municipalities are earning better than us,’ he said.

He added that they have realised that they are being abused and opted to go on a go-slow strike up until their protest application is approved.
‘We were hoping that on Wednesday after a full council meeting we will get response.
The ZDM speaker, Cllr Sibusiso Nkwanyana said the issue of compensation was discussed during the council meeting and is expected to be finalised soon.
‘Workers are allowed to go on a legal strike and we can’t stop them, however, the municipal workers’ salaries are not under our jurisdiction.
‘They can take that matter to bargaining council to look at it if they want to,’ said Nkwanyana.
