Mother speaks out over daughter’s rape

The mother spoke to the ZO outside the Empangeni Magistrate's Court on Tuesday afternoon

‘WHY did he do this to my child? Is it that he hates me or what?’

These were the unanswered questions of a despairing mother whose 11-year-old daughter had been raped last year.

The mother spoke to the ZO outside the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday afternoon.

The accused, Vusumuzi Mthethwa (44), received a life sentence by Magistrate Nomfundo Sipunzi just moments before.

The State’s case, led by Chief Prosecutor Sharon Bux, informed the court that the girl was raped on three occasions in 2017 when she used to visit a tuck shop close to their home in KwaMthethwa Reserve near Mtubatuba.

‘I can’t let this go, I don’t know how I am going to cope with my child, her being at such a young age.

‘But I am happy that the verdict was life imprisonment, it made me believe that I can trust our justice system.’

According to the mother her daughter is barely coping at school.

‘Some of the children at school know what happened to her and they are teasing her.’
