Mthenjana hailed as a unifier

Calls to set up trust fund

ANC Youth League Secretary-General Njabulo Nzuza has called for his party to consider setting up a trust fund that will look after the children of ANC leaders who die young.

Nzuza was speaking at the funeral service of the City of uMhlathuze Speaker Cllr Mfundo Mthenjana, held on Sunday at Umfolozi TVET College.

Nzuza said he was disturbed by the death of young leaders in the ANC, particularly in the Musa Dladla Region.

He described Mthenjana as a reliable comrade and a hero who was always there for the ANC.

‘He participated in all the programmes in the life of the ANC. He lived with the people and was a champion of the people. The ANC will never be the same without Mfundo. He was a unifier and I wish to thank his family for giving us such a polished diamond. I sometimes feel, we should have done more to save his life,’ he said.

‘When I received a call from Mdu Mhlongo (city Mayor), I thought he was wishing me for my birthday, only to realise he was saying Mfundo Mthenjana was no more. Each time my birthday comes, I will be reminded of Comrade Mfundo,’ he said.

Musa Dladla Regional Chairperson Nonhle Mkhulisi described Mthenjana as a soldier who died with his boots on, adding that he would be remembered for making a difference in people’s lives.

Apart from being a Speaker of the city, he also served on three committees at King Cetshwayo District Municipality. I hope he will join other fallen heroes of our glorious movement such as Thulani Mashaba, Musa Dladla, Nelson Mandela and others.

The funeral service was also attended by KZN Premier Willies Mchunu, local mayors, members of both the Provincial and National Legislatures, including ANC’s alliance partners.

Mthenjana was laid to rest at eSikhaleni cemetry.
