Learners expelled after disobeying haircut order

Church takes on school principal

MEMBERS of the Nazareth Baptist Church in Nongoma have accused Prince Ndabuko High School Principal, Mr Sithole, of violating the constitutional right of their children.

They claim Sithole suspended three Grade 10 learners after they refused to cut their hair, which is against church policy.

One of the disgruntled parents, Mziwamandla Khumalo, said it is unacceptable that their children are now subjected to religious discrimination.

‘Our children were expelled from school on Friday last week for refusing to compromise on their religious beliefs.

‘ I went to the school to speak to Mr Sithole about this matter with the aim of explaining the situation to him, but he refused to listen.

‘We then urged the Department of Education to intervene,’ said Khumalo.

‘We returned on Monday to try and reason with the principal, but he remained arrogant and insisted that the three boys must obey his command or leave his school.

‘We nevertheless went back on Tuesday to again plead with him, but he ordered the security guard to lock the gate and refused us access to the school premises.

‘We have also reported the matter to the Nazareth Judicial Council, asking them to intervene as well.’

Department of Education spokesperson Muzi Mhlambi undertook to send the circuit inspector to investigate and arbitrate.

KZN Nazareth Judicial Council Chairperson, Willington Myeni, confirmed they had received a complaint and would take the matter to court.

‘We urge all parents who face similar challenges to report these to us. They can contact me on 071 2218524,’ said Myeni.
