Bonus care for cancer patients

Cancer patients from northern KZN no longer need to travel to Durban for treatment

THANKS to collaborative efforts between the KZN Department of Health and oncologists from the private sector, public sector patients from King Cetshwayo, Zululand and uMkhanyakude districts are receiving vital treatment in Richards Bay.

Previously needing to travel to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban for treatment, 75 patients each month are receiving radiation therapy, while a further 40 each month are seen for radiotherapy at Joint Medical House in Richards Bay.

According to KZN Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo, several attempts by the department to recruit full-time oncologists have so far been unsuccessful, but headhunting continues.

The provincial health department is also collaborating with the national department in importing oncologists from Cuba or India.

Dhlomo said the top five cancers faced in KZN are cervical, breast, colorectal, head and neck tumours, and prostate cancer.

For all types of cancer, the province’s primary objective is to raise awareness, as well as available prevention, treatment and care.
